What is Facebook?

Facebook is a social networking website with more than 600 million active users. Users create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. When using facebook, you can join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics. Facebook allows anyone who declares themselves to be at least 13 years old to become a registered user of the website.

What are the benefits of Facebook?

When people search through Google, they are searching for something, be it the answer to a question, a product or more information on a topic of interest.  When people search through Facebook however, they are connecting with (on average) 130 friends.  With facebook, users share content with their network of friends which means that if you get someone to talk about / link to or recommend a product or service, it's like placing an advert which is exposed to (on average) 130 people.  However, the great benefit of this advert is that it is more like a personal recommendation so it carries more weight than some broader forms of advertising.

Users are encouraged to 'like' and 'comment' on things which allows each user to share and recommend and comment to people who care about what they think.  These social spaces are feeding website traffic to in the same way that being top of Google on a popular keyword does.  The Daily Mail gets 10% of its website traffic from facebook.  X-Factor generates 1 million comments on its Facebook page per show in the UK and it a platform for fans to chat.

Other Benefits of Facebook

Facebook offers companies an opportunity to brand themselves online in an area which compliments their website design.  It can be an area where you can manage your online reputation and deal with customer concerns or queries.  Facebook provides an area for customers to view and share information - it is also a good learning resource for customer behaviour.
